This is College Physics Answers with Shaun Dychko. This is the objective lens that is closest to the object and it has to produce an image that is between the objective lens and the eyepiece lens— it has to be a real image— and so it's going to be an inverted image that is smaller than the objective and then this image, which is labeled i o for image created by the objective then serves as the object for the eyepiece lens and this will be created at a position inside of the focal point of this eyepiece lens and so it's going to act as a magnifying glass and it's going to produce a virtual image that is much larger than the object.
