This is College Physics Answers with Shaun Dychko. We want to know what fraction of a piece of ice is submerged in fresh water at 0 degrees Celsius. So the fraction submerged is the density of the thing floating divided by the density of the fluid that it's in and we look up the density of ice in our table [11.1] and it is 0.917 times 10 to the 3 kilograms per cubic meter and we divide that by the density of freshwater at 0 degrees which we are told is 1000 kilograms per cubic meter. So the 1000's cancel leaving us with 0.917 is the fraction submerged.
