Hi Shaun,
I'd like to ask why leg A does not bear negative sign because it orientes to the west, and why you put A and B in the absolute value. Thank you!
Hi dchu, thank you for the question. It would be correct to write leg A with a negative, but then in the calculation with you'd have to interpret the direction of the angle based on the picture. A negative angle strictly means clockwise from the positive x-axis, which is not correct based on the picture. The calculator can't tell when to give an answer in the 2nd or 4th quadrant, both of which are the inverse tangents of . It always gives the solution closest to zero. The magnitude of the calculator response is the reference angle, which is to say the angle between the terminal arm (aka resultant) and the x-axis, which would be a standard position angle (measuring counter clockwise from the positive x-axis) of .
To make a long story short, I use positive values since we're concerned only with the getting the reference angle using the calculator, and then using the picture to determine the correct direction.
I hope this helps,
Shaun
