This is College Physics Answers with Shaun Dychko. We are told that the heart has 150 beats per minute and that is a frequency... it's a cycles per time and so to find the period which is the time per cycle or the time per heartbeat, we take the reciprocal of the frequency. So the reciprocal of 150 beats per minute is 1 minute for every 150 beats but we are asked for the time in seconds and so we convert the minutes into seconds by multiplying by 60 seconds per minute and we are left with 0.40 seconds per beat.
